What our guests have said about this accommodation

Jorgen Erik Larsen
The camp site at Glen Reenen was well managed and clean.
Robert Godley
The staff was very helpful and friendly. The ablution block and camp site was very clean and tidy. The Scenery was breath taking beautiful. And Sheppard thank you so much for assisting with our booking, will be emailing you again for bookings at other SAN parks
Rigard Geyser
The camp site is maintained in a neat and tidy fashion. However, the showers had a problem with water pressure. Showers only trickled making for an unpleasant experience.
Sharonne Dewing
Loved it - very comfortable. will be back for a longer stay.
le roux helen
Baie goed ons het dit vreeslik baie geniet omgewing baie mooi en diens was baie goed. Sal weer kom. Dankie
william watson
Very enjoyable stay. The campsite was under beautiful pine trees-very quite surroundings and clean and tidy. Will definitely visit again. Regards, William Watson
Saartjie van Zyl
Die kampterrein is baie mooi. Lekker groot staanplekke.
We had a most enjoyable visit. We were very pleased with the good condition of all the animals we saw. We would love to return to the park, and will probably do so at some stage again. Pity we live so far away.Thank you for a wonderful experience! Most definitely the highlight of our Christmas!
Michelle Viviers
Very happy with the premises .
Dot Liebetrau
We had a great time in this clean, friendly camp.
Felicity Botha
Our stay was wonderful. The chalet was clean and neat. We had a heater in our bedroom and an electric blanket which came in very useful as we experienced snow on the mountain tops. The reception ladies were very friendly and helpful. Thank you for a lovely weekend. We will surely come again.
Jose Heron
We were there for a short visit only and utilised the facilities as overnight lodging more than anything else. We found the camp spotlessly clean and very well maintained. All the staff we met were friendly and helpful. We took a short game drive the one afternoon when we had time and we saw a beautiful black backed jackal with 2 adolescent pups sitting right next to the road. They allowed us to watch them for a good few minutes before they moved on. Lovely.
Roger Thompson
I stayed for two nights over the weekend and had a lovely stay. The park is lovely and peaceful, the ablutions clean and well attended to. I would definiately plant to return sometime soon in the future.
Werner van Merwe
jp Du preez
Overall brilliant. One of SA's best.
Basil Foxcroft
Comfortable clean and neat with spectacular views - We chose the no electricity option but not sure if the kitchen was supposed to have electricity as the hobs and plugs in the kitchen were not working. But the water in the bathrooms were hot and showers were clean - Just from April take warm clothes for the evenings and the hikes are well marked. Wonderful trip, Would recommend to add to anyone's wishlist.
Bev Mills
As always the campsite was immaculate. facilities were very clean and Staff was friendly. I'm concerned about the lone baboon and lone black backed jackal that have become very unafraid in the camp. I would HATE to see these animals destroyed because of human behaviour...so I suggest a couple of warning signs in the camp. I was thrilled to see men picking up refuse on the sides of the roads in the park.I would love to see taxis forbidden from using it as a short cut to Clarens/Bethlehem but do understand their plight. Thank you for a wonderful stay and I will definitely be back many times.
Marie-Paul Howard
Our stay at Glen Reenen was very good indeed and the accommodation all we could have hoped for. It was very clean and comfortable. The bathroom just needs better aeration. We would have loved staying on longer had we had time. The people in the office were very courteous and welcoming. We had no time to go game viewing sadly but the sunset on the gates and the rising full moon compensated. Thank you very much for a lovely stay. We would love to go again.
Frehr Reinhold
The stay was fantastic - freindly staff, cosy units. For a long-term stay-over as we did (5 days), the kitchen utensils are minimal should one self-cater for 3 meals a day
Hessel Benedictus
Reception not up to standard, rondavel good, only strong smell of wood protection
Chas King
Our Longdawel was really comfortable and cosy. All the facilities were great and we were well received. Our only problem were the noisy staff yelling to each other at the start and end of their work day. They were also gathered in a room in the carpark near us and made such a noise. Otherwise a great stay.
David Radebe
Realised that the place was renovated, could have been allocated a completed one (wardrobe had no hangers and tv not clear). Is there a reason why a resident should pay park fees for every night spent? had a good time and hope to go back.
Michael Lehloenya
The experience was wonderful: the hikes; the food at the hotel; and the scenery. The only disappointment was the inside of the wardrobes were dirty, which led to the dirt ending up on our clothes.
Angela Mary Barker
We booked the camp rondavel, mentioning we were pensioners, but the first rondavel we saw had a flimsy ladder going upstairs to the bedroom. Not for the aged! Also the room had not been serviced so we were shown a second one. This was better, with a set of metal stairs to the upper level. What would we have done if the first rondavel was the ONLY one available? However we did enjoy ourselves and Golden Gate was beautiful.
thomas foord
I wish to express my concern regarding Camp access when staying at this site. On numerous occasions passers by would simply walk or drive into the campsite without being asked for an entry permit. They use the ablutions and leave. Who is looking after the campers property when they are out hiking? When I took this issue up with reception, I was shrugged at as if to say "Dont make it my problem"
David Barrowman
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in a super camp site but would like to offer the following constructive criticism. 1. Baboons raiding the camp sites even when the campers are present and stealing food out of tents, car boots etc is becoming a problem. They managed to get into our secured caravan tent on three occasions by first creeping under the caravan and then pulling up the tent pegs after the inner section was secured. Our fear is that one day someone will inadvertently corner one in their tent and get attacked. We strongly suggest that SAN Parks take action to curb these raids before something drastic occurs.2. Although the ablution blocks are still in excellent condition, deterioration is creeping in due to poor cleaning methods, maintenance and supervision. The central ladies bathroom regularly floods right out of the door due to poor tiling profiles. Not much you can do about that barring uplifting the tiles and starting again but having a cleaner managing the problem during peak season would help tremendously. Toilet seats were often found loose and need to be maintained regularly. Cleaning and toilet paper replenishment regularly only happened after midday much to the annoyance of some campers. The cleaners need to be issued with and instructed in the use of disinfectants when cleaning the shower cubicles and around the gents urinals. Supervision of the cleaners appears to be totally lacking. We watched as one lady spent entire days sitting in the storeroom on a plastic chair, only moving to sit outside during tea and extended lunch breaks. The general inefficiency and apathy of the cleaners was something to behold and must cost National Parks a fortune which in turn gets passed onto camping and chalet tariffs. Again a supervision issue. 3. When we arrived on 3 January the grass in the camp ground was pretty long and still hadn't been cut when we left on 11 January. This resulted in the camp site looking more than a little shoddy. 4. The cleaning staff should be instructed to clear the stream of trash on a regular basis. Some thoughtless campers have thrown their fire ashes and other rubbish into the stream which is extremely unsightly but probably most of the other trash is caused by baboons stealing shopping bags out of camp sites and dumping them after removing the contents.5. loud music and general noise should be banned and appropriate signage erected stating this. A Spionkop camp sign reads 'If you can be heard beyond the perimeter of your site you are making a noise'. Some people just don't understand the concept of keeping it down resulting in disturbing their neighbours into the night. We hope our comments are seen as constructive as we thoroughly enjoy using SAN Parks facilities and look forward to our next camp.
Lucinda Labuschagne
The facilities are well maintained, managed and clean. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The animal life and nature are just amazingly beautiful! I will recommend Glen Reenen Restcamp to any nature lover.
Gert Postma
Had an excellent experience - family cottage with "stoep" being the highlight of the package, especially when it rains (which it did!).
Barry Walker
Our stay at Glen Reenen Rest camp site was really great, the ablutions were clean and camp site was lovely and clean as well. However it would be great if the sites were demarcated and each one had a number with its own electrical power point so that you knew were your site was as some campers tend to take up more than one site. Other than that we had a wonderful stay at Glen Reenen Rest camp and will be back again. Keep up the good work.

The campsite was very nice but the toilets needed to be cleaned more often the once a day, especially the male bathrooms.
Ben van Rensburg
Nice park but some things need attention.maybe gate control to actual camp site..showers in ablution blocks needs curtains or something to keep spilling water all over the place...more regular cleaning of ablution blocks will be appreciated.

We stopped over in Golden Gate on our trip in the Freestate - camped very comfortably next to the river, and enjoyed a early morning walk in the hills. A great camp spot, and great walking routes.
Frik Grobler
The camp is neat, well maintained. Ablution facilities are neat, cleaned daily and kept in good repair (if you report the defects). We enjoyed camping next to the stream, but the baboons looting our tent was a big surprise! They are very cheeky too! The national road passing through, right next to the camp was a big downturn! You hear the loud music, long before you even see the car, occupant shouting and screaming, all hours of the night. Especially the Taxi's. The cars and trucks speed over the speedbumps, making a lot of noise, disrupting any peaceful sleep one might expect to get in a National Park. I know it does not fit in with nature, but I would suggest that the park put up walls between the road and the campsite. There is also no control on day permits, and anybody can come and go as they please through the park. This is a big concern. I would suggest a ticketing system like they have for payed parking for the through traffic. Even though, we enjoyed our time at Glen Reenen. Thanks.
Tanya Delport
we camped at glen reenen during the december 2009 holidays and we enjoyed it very much. a great contributing factor was the extremely clean and well maintained bathrooms. some of the other campers complained about the road running past the camp but I can honestly say that it did not bother us at all.

This place is a perfect getaway, its quite and you can really just enjoy the nature and what it gives back to you.Love the place.

Glen Rheenen camp is situated in stunning setting and staff is friendly. Unfortunately the chalets are suffering from old age and this is specially visible in kitchen and all the cupboards. These are in urgent need of upgrade to replace especially the untreated Supawood cupbourd doors. These opened via a hole in the door which you have to stick your finger through. All the previous guests seem to have had dirty hands because the hole and area around are permanently filthy with dirt ingrained into the wood. I wanted to wash my hands each time I opened a cupboard. This said, everything else was really satisfying and it was a relaxing stay.

We were hoping to venture out on one of the hiking trails offered, but did not manage to.The kids however did and thoroughly enjoyed the openness with amazing rock formations.A small, quiet, clean camp with beautiful scenery and enough shade. The ablutions and kitchen were impeccably clean at all times. The ground staff are friendly and especially the lady in Reception who is well-informed and willing to help.We will definitely be back in the future.
EricMcKechnie
The facilities are great for camping - pity there are no distributed water points amongst the sites though. The reception was really friendly and accommodating and John Martins very helpful. We will be back to hike the trails.

The camping site neat and ablution blocks is kept very clean though out the day making camping a pleasure.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 nights at Glen Reened. I would recommend it for anyone. The only criticism is that they don't wash dishes.

Rondavel, shop and trails were fine. Not sufficient circular drives to get closer to view game. (When compared with Addo Elephant Park)

What a beautiful place to visit!!!We had such an amazing experience at Glen Reenen! The staff were so helpful and welcoming. We were only there for a short time unfortunately, but we made sure to take a walk along the trails at Glen Reenen...This was definitely the highlight of our trip! An absolute must-see when visiting!Other than that, our Longdawel was very cozy and well cared for. It had everything that we needed. The Camp was spotless and immaculately maintained!Overall I had a fantastic stay at Glen Reenen and will be sure to return as soon as possible!

Yes to break away from JHB is always a pleasure. The kids and some friends asked what do you do there? I said nothing is also fine with me. I went to relax. The trip went well except for the few potholes before Bethlehem. We towed an off-road trailer with a tent on top. The car lacked some power with the uphill sections but managed. We stopped at Clarens and we could see why it is so popular. We looked at a few art exhibitions and the stalls where the locals were displaying their art. We then went to Golden gate to set up camp. Some of the best spots next to the river was occupied. We chose a spot and assembled the tent. After an hour we were admiring the mountain changing colours as the sun set in the West. When the sun went down behind the mountain it became extremely cold. Luckily we went prepared. Warm clothes, sleeping bag and duvet. A warm hat would have helped. The people in the caravans probably had it a bit more comfortable. The next day we went for a walk up to the echo point. Amazing. Later we went for a drive pass the Langtoon dam. Along the route we saw 2 Buffalo. Where were the rest we all asked. In the Kruger you see many of them. We then went to the Golden gate hotel. A bit on the quiet side but very nice. Later we went to the camp to start a fire and to braai something. 4 bikers arrived in the dark and starting putting up their small tents. They made a fire for heat and to braai something. The next morning I spoke to one guy and he said they drove down from JHB to Golden Gate all along the dirt roads and headed back the next day. Like the Wild hogs. Many guys would like to do it. We saw however many bikers that weekend who are probably in the high income bracket, looking at their machinery. We came back and said we will go again but after the rainy season when the mountains are green. The only negative we have was the traffic and speed bumps passing the camp site, especially at night. The ablution blocks were very clean. Thanks Die Fourie

The hotwater at the ablution facilities are the hottest we have experienced in any camp in SA.The ablution was kept spotlessly clean. The receptionist could aquire a bit of friendlism and smile now and then. The park has tarred road and although there were some veldfires the scenes are still breathtaking. We enjoyed our stay and would like to visit again.

We stayed in all Golden Gates accommodation (with the exception of Basotho Cultural village which was under construction at the time after a fire). Glen Reenen is the central hub in Golden Gateand where you report to to stay in all the other rest camps as well. The camp is beautiful, situated across from a mountain over the road. A petrol station and shop make the stay very convenient. One can walk some really pretty trails which vary in intensity and offer magnificient views of the surroundings. The bungalows we stayed in had DSTV, a fully equipped kitchen and made for an immensely enjoyable stay. The small town of Clarens is nearby and makes for a great place to grab some lunch or dinner. There are lots of quaint little shops to check out as well.
Caroline
Authentic luxury hut with thatched roof. Looked small from the outside, but was very spacious inside. Open planned with fully equipped kitchen, and large flat screen tv with dstv. The hut also had a small private patio with bbq facilities. Glen Reenen is probably seen as the main camp, situated on the same plot as main reception and the local shop.Cross over the road from the camp, and you're onto a walking trail - ideal!

I think the price is overrated for what we've been offer at the campsite. There nothing to do for the kids. And you must include your conservation fees into the price as it is also too much for adults / children. It was really boring and your cafe prices are overrated. We must ride to Bethlehem to get our stuff and food. Sorry but I expected more for the price.
Nicola Scott
Campsite very clean.Washrooms and kitchen very clean and everything working. All staff, reception, shop, campsite very friendly, polite and helpful.Only problem was the big trucks going through in the middle of the night.Had dinner at the hotel one night, the quality of the food was excellent, and the staff there were also very well trained and professional.Looking forward to returning in the future.

Carpets or floor mats will warm the place especially in winter. Bathroom very cold, maybe a wall heater or two. Not fair to charge sleep over clients conservation fee if they do not use the viewing facilities.

The front desk welcome was shocking, to say the least. Two of the ladies kept us waiting whilst they were busy on the telephone to prospective clients with on-one else around to assist. Eventually, )what seemed to be a more senior lady) someone attended to us, but then sent us to our rondawel without a key to get in. The rondawel was badly placed, the front door hinge was stuck and the doors could not open fully, the window blind was broken on one of the windows. So, we were immediately upgraded and sent to a wonderful cottage at Brandwag. This was bright, cheerful, had wonderful views, and made the unpleasant initial experience, that much more worthwhile. This is our second stay at Golden Gate, the first was a camping experience approximately 3 years ago, which, despite the rain in December, was very pleasant and far too short. The shop could do with more day to day things (such as newspapers/magazines), instead of the usual curios, t-shirts and touristy things. One of the rondawels could be used for the more touristy things, and keep the shop to basic necessities, especially for the campers. The nearest town, Clarens is 17 kilometres away and when on holiday, one does not want to have to drive there each day for a newspaper, for example. Overall, we will return to Golden Gate, despite the unpleasant welcome (unfortunately, this is just how things are in SA today) because we find the distance from Johannesburg just perfect for a short break to get good clean air, a change of scenery and some rest.

We enjoyed our camping experience. Bathrooms clean. Lovely walks. Pity about the noise made by the school trip - screaming and shouting and the music being played by our neighbours. Some peace and quiet would have been prefered.

I would like to thank the staff of Glen Reenen for friendly and good services. The camp site and facilities was very good. We did the "4 hour" walk which took 6 hours, but it did not bother us that it took longer.

Went for the hiking, did not visit the game reserve. Hiking was nice, short routes to accommodate most people. Long walks available.Rondavel: Average, can be better if space is supplied for groceries. Suggestion - Something against the wall above stove. Electric blankets a winner in winter. Will go again, thanks!

We had a very nice stay at Glen Reenen. There were a few problems with lighting when we arrived, but the staff were helpful in resolving them. Will visit again. Thanks

Our stay at Glen Reenen, Golden Gate was absolutely wonderful, and to top everything we had snow on the Saturday as well. It was beautiful. If you cannot talk to the Lord while staying there, being in the nature, there must be something terribly wrong.

The unit was small, dirty and unkempt. I was horrified and the idea to pack up and leave was an option. This is not something you can offer South African residents never mind show this to international tourists.

I found the accommodation to be below standard, dirty and was generally very disappointed. It was far overpriced and shocking to say the least.

We had a great stay and we will come again.

Fantastic travel agent for African safari family trip!
Wow! Shann was and is fantastic! She figured out a way to make our entire trip work. We are going on a 2 week trip to South Africa and Botswana. She really helped tie it all together as a wonderful, cohesive trip. She is super nice and super smart and very knowledgeable. She is also flexible and thoughtful, etc., etc. When the chips were down (and we literally were considering pulling the plug on the whole trip), she found a way to make the entire itinerary work and got us excited about our wonderful adventure! Highly recommend!
