Tankwa Karoo Rest Camp

A SANParks self-catering camp.

This park is situated in a Karoo veld basin between the Cederberg mountain range in the west, the Roggeveld Escarpment in the east, and the Klein Roggeveld Mountains in the south. With the brightest stars and rare plant life, it offers a particular destination for lovers of nature and arid landscapes. The park is also known for its spectacular birdlife and is a well-known stop for bird enthusiasts with a birding list of 174 species of which 18 are endemics.

We do not take rest camp bookings. Camps are booked directly with SANParks, where current tariffs are published.

Accommodation

Informal Campsite (CK15)
Fully self-sufficient campers are allowed to camp at designated spots on an "only leave your footprints" - basis. Each site is for the exclusive use of the party of up to 15 individuals reserving such a site. (no electricity, ablutions or water)

  • Volmoesfontein: 2 Vehicles allowed per site, accessible with normal sedan vehicles, no ablutions or water
  • Oom Rickert: 2 Vehicles allowed per site , 4x4 advisable in rainy seasons, access by high clearance 2x4, no ablutions or water
  • Biesjiesfontein: 2 Vehicles allowed per site, Accessible with normal sedan vehicles, no ablutions or water
  • Steenkampshoek: 2 Vehicles allowed per site, accessible only by 4x4, No ablutions or water
  • Pyperseboom: 2 Vehicles allowed per site , accessible only by 2x4, no ablutions or water
  • Skaapwagterspos: 2 Vehicles allowed per site, accessible only by 2x4, No ablutions or water

Formal Campsite: (CK6)

  • Perdekloof: 4x4 advisable in rainy seasons, access by high clearance 2x4, bathroom with toilet, shower and basin, braai facilities - no braai grid supplied, each campsite with own bathroom and enclosed kitchen with sink, no cooking facilities. Gas geyser, solar lighting and no electric points.
  • Langkloof:4x4 advisable in rainy seasons, access by high clearance 2x4, bathroom with toilet, shower and basin, braai facilities - no braai grid supplied, each campsite with own bathroom and enclosed kitchen with sink, no cooking facilities. Gas geyser, solar lighting and no electric points

Cottages

  • Four-bed De Zyver Cottage has 2 bedrooms, each with 1 double bed, a bathroom., Fully equipped kitchen and living area, sleeper couch in living area, candle/lantern lighting. Warm water through donkey boiler
  • Six bed Paulshoek Cottage has 2 bedrooms, each with 1 single and 1 double bed, a bathroom,, Fully Equipped kitchen, living area, candle/lantern lighting and outside braai facilities. Warm water through donkey boiler

Tanqua Guest house is conveniently situated on the southern boundary of the Tankwa National Park and a stone’s throw from the Oudebaaskraal Dam. The complex is ideally suited for groups of up to 18 guests. A 900m landing strip situated next to the main building, also allows for fly-ins by guests.

  • Eight-bed Tanqua Guest House has 1 en-suite bedroom with a double bed, 3 bedrooms, each with 2 single beds. Bathroom with toilet, shower and bath. Fully Equipped kitchen, living area and outside braai area. Restricted 220v power.
  • Four-bed Tanqua 2 Guest House has one bedroom with 2 single beds and the other with a double bed, bathroom, braai facilities available. Part of a 800m square double story building, Restricted 220V power Shared kitchen, lounge, living area with fireplace.
  • Four-bed Tanqua 3 Guest House has one bedroom with 2 single beds and the other with a double bed, bathroom, braai facilities available. Part of a 800m square double story building, Restricted 220V power Shared kitchen, lounge, living area with fireplace.
  • Two-bed Tanqua 1 G\house (GH2) has one en-suite bedroom with a double bed, braai facilities available. Part of a 800m square double story building, Restricted 220V power Shared kitchen, lounge, living area with fireplace.

There is no shop, restaurant, public phones or ATMs in the park. There is a General dealer and bottle store in Middelpos. No fuel available in the park last stops for petrol (measured from Park offices) are Ceres (180km), Sutherland (120km - closed from Saturdays 13:00 for weekend), Calvinia (110km) and Middelpos (52km).

We do not take rest camp bookings.
