The detail
The prestigious Shamwari Private Game Reserve covers 20,000 hectares of verdant bush along the Bushman’s River in the Eastern Cape. This malaria-free reserve is home to five of the seven habitats found in South Africa, and its location close to the Garden Route makes a safari at Shamwari a perfect choice for those seeking to combine a tour of the Garden Route with a luxury Big Five safari.
Shamwari Long Lee Manor, built in 1910, stands as Shamwari’s flagship lodge. This magnificent Edwardian five-star manor has been beautifully restored and offers a colonial experience in the heart of the African bush. Long Lee Manor provides exceptional comfort, personalized service, and spectacular views of the waterhole and plains sweeping down to the Bushman’s River.
The accommodation is tastefully designed to complement its location. The Manor House has been lovingly restored to pay homage to the area’s rich heritage, adding romance to every stay.
Facilities at the manor include two swimming pools, a relaxation retreat, fitness center, steam room, dining room, outdoor boma, conference facility, and gift boutique.
Guests can enjoy early morning and evening game drives led by professional guides, as well as guided game walks that allow for up-close encounters with the smaller, wondrous creatures of the African bush. Visits to Shamwari's Born Free Foundation Animal Rescue Centre, Ian Player Rhino Awareness Centre, and the Shamwari Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre can also be arranged.
Shamwari is home to a variety of plants, birds, and animals. Guests frequently spot the Big Five during their stay, along with cheetah, caracal, wild dog, and various antelope. Evening game drives often reveal elusive nocturnal creatures such as the hopping springhare, aardwolf, and brown hyena.
For bird enthusiasts, Shamwari Game Reserve is a haven, boasting over 250 bird species. Among its raptors are Black Harriers, Pale Chanting Goshawks, Black-shouldered Kites, Booted Eagles, and Secretary Birds. The Bushman’s River meanders through the reserve, offering refuge to kingfishers, darters, African Shelducks, finfoots, and the iconic African Fish Eagle.
Shamwari Long Lee Manor is an ideal destination for couples, large families, and groups seeking a private luxury safari getaway.
