The Details
Location
Shipwreck Lodge sits in the Skeleton Coast Central Concession Area, inside Namibia's Skeleton Coast National Park, the least visited of all the country's parks. The park runs for roughly 310 miles along the Atlantic, a coastline littered with shipwrecks, whale bones and wind-sculpted dunes.
The lodge is a joint venture between Natural Selection, Namibian operators Trip Travel and Journeys Namibia, and the communities bordering the park. Proceeds support the conservation of desert-adapted brown hyena and lion, alongside black rhino relocation in the Kunene region and giraffe research in the north-west.
Accommodation
Ten cabins are strung along a sand dune facing the Atlantic, each built to resemble the shipwrecks that gave the coast its name. Eight are twin or double rooms and two are family cabins that can take extra beds. All are en suite with indoor showers, solar-powered, and warmed in the chilly mornings by a wood-burning stove. Wi-Fi is available, hairdryers on request, and laundry is included.
Dining
At the centre of camp, an innovatively designed lounge and restaurant share a wraparound deck with uninterrupted views across the dunes to the ocean. Meals and beverages are included, served alongside a library and fireplace that make this the gathering point of the lodge.
Activities
Days are spent on nature drives across the dramatic concession, guided walks from the lodge to the seashore, and quad-bike runs over shifting dunes. Sandboarding offers a faster way down the slip faces. Wildlife sightings centre on desert-adapted elephant digging for water, occasional lion and brown hyena, Cape fur seal colonies and a long list of specialist birds including Rüppell's korhaan, Benguela long-billed lark and tractrac chat.
