The Details

Location

Ulusaba Safari Lodge sits within the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve in South Africa's Greater Kruger region, built along the banks of a dry riverbed that draws wildlife past the suites throughout the day and night. Part of Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Limited Edition collection, the lodge is the ground-level counterpart to the cliff-top Rock Lodge and shares traversing rights across more than 13,500 hectares of private reserve.

Rooms

Accommodation comprises eight Elephant Suites and The Hide, a trio of elevated treehouse-style suites overlooking a hippo-filled dam with their own shared living area. Every suite features floor-to-ceiling glass doors, a private deck with plunge pool, a freestanding bath with panoramic views and a private outdoor shower. Interiors draw on Tsonga heritage, layering vibrant textures and artisanal detailing.

The Hide can be taken as a three-bedroom exclusive-use space, with its own lounge, indoor and outdoor dining areas and an expansive deck with a boma firepit, ideal for families or small groups travelling together.

Dining

Communal areas at Safari Lodge include an indoor dining room, outdoor deck, indoor bar, wine cellar and boma, with meals served in a rotation of settings to match the rhythm of the day. Guests staying in The Hide also have the option of private dining within their own shared living area.

Activities

Twice-daily game drives leave in the early morning and late afternoon, each lasting around three hours and shaped by guests' interests by a dedicated ranger and tracker. The reserve is home to the Big Five, with mornings particularly rewarding for tracking the big cats returning from a night's hunt and afternoons often ending with sundowners in the bush. Weather permitting, guided safari walks invite a closer look at smaller creatures, tracks and the medicinal use of trees and plants.

Beyond game viewing, guests can enjoy the spa with double therapy rooms, cold plunge pools, sauna, hydrotherapy pool and Rasul mud ritual, along with a crystal eco-pool, yoga deck and reflexology walkway. Tennis and a new pickleball court, a gym, a private observatory for stargazing and Pride 'n Purpose community visits round out the offering.

Notable exceptions

Children can join game drives with parents or a guardian but cannot participate in walking safaris (12+). A private vehicle can be pre-booked at ZAR 18,000 per day (2025), subject to availability. Due to Sabi Sand Reserve restrictions on guest/vehicle numbers, extra children may not always be accommodated.
