The malaria-free Shamwari Private Game Reserve is located a mere one hour’s drive from the seaside town of Port Elizabeth, in the province of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Shamwari Private Game Reserve is so much more than a leading big five safari destination and should be commended on their invaluable contribution to wildlife conservation. The Shamwari ethos is to practice responsible conservation and they have managed to do so successfully with the help of experienced veterinary staff, qualified ecologists, and advanced anti-poaching units.
Looking at the Shamwari Private Game Reserve, it is hard to believe that this pristine 25 000 hectare big five reserve was once agricultural land. The Shamwari team have rehabilitated the land into a sanctuary that protects Africa’s most beloved wildlife, and closely monitor the vegetation and rare and endangered species such as leopard, black rhino and brown hyena. The well-known television series – Shamwari, A Wild Life, was filmed at the reserve’s animal rehabilitation center. Shamwari Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, which helps to rescue, rehabilitate and care for sick, injured, abandoned or orphaned animals under the care of a professional veterinary team. Once these animals have been nursed back to health, they are released back into their natural habitat. The rescue center is home to lions and leopards from across the world and guests staying on the reserve are given a tour of the facility, along with the education centers. As part of your Shamwari experience, you are introduced to wildlife conservation through visits to the different centers, and get to enjoy an array of safari activities which include dawn and dusk open-vehicle game drives, guided bush walks, bird watching, bush dining, and rejuvenating spa treatments.
