Moremi Game Reserve

The delta's predator heartland.

A pristine wildlife sanctuary in the heart of the Okavango Delta, widely regarded as the predator capital of Africa.

Moremi Game Reserve

Moremi Game Reserve

The Delta's game-rich heart

Moremi Game Reserve protects the eastern reaches of the Okavango, where permanent water meets big dry-land game country. It carries some of the delta's densest predator populations, lion, leopard and one of Africa's strongest wild dog strongholds, against a backdrop of lagoons, mopane forest and open floodplain.

Around its edges, the private concessions of Khwai and the delta proper take the same wildlife and add night drives, off-road driving and walking. Moremi is where Botswana's wild reputation was made.

Common questions

Moremi Game Reserve, answered.

Read more about Moremi Game Reserve
Moremi or a private Delta concession?
Moremi is the public reserve: spectacular, more affordable, but daytime driving on set tracks and more vehicles in season. The private concessions around it, Khwai and the delta camps, add off-road driving, night drives and walking with far fewer people. Many itineraries blend both.
When is the best time to visit Moremi?
May to October, the dry season, is prime: floodwater up, surrounding country dry, game concentrated. The green season is quieter and lusher, with superb birding and lower rates.
What game is Moremi known for?
Predators. Lion and leopard densities are excellent, and the greater Moremi and Khwai area is one of the best places in Africa to spend time with wild dogs. Elephant, buffalo, red lechwe and hippo fill in the delta staples.
Self-drive or fly-in?
Moremi is one of the few delta areas a serious self-driver can reach, sandy tracks, 4x4 essential, but most of our guests fly in from Maun to a camp airstrip and let the guides do the work. Fly-in is the way to see more with less friction.
How many nights do I need?
Three nights in the Moremi and Khwai area does it justice; pair it with two or three nights at a water camp deeper in the delta for the full contrast.
How does Moremi pair with Chobe?
Naturally: a light aircraft or a scenic drive through Savuti links them, and the elephant-heavy Chobe riverfront finishes the trip before Victoria Falls. It is the backbone of the classic northern Botswana circuit.

When

The Moremi Game Reserve changes dramatically with the seasons, making it an all year round safari destination.

The dry season months of May to September is considered to be the best time to visit the Moremi Game Reserve. There is less vegetation and animals do tend to congregate around waterholes, making game viewing a lot easier. In addition to this, during the months of June to October, the Okavango Delta is generally in full flood making boating and mokoro safaris available at many lodges and camps. The days are pleasant with clear skies and very little chance of rain, but the early mornings and evenings do tend to be much cooler. The dry season is considered to be high season but the reserve never feels overcrowded.

In the month of November, although still considered to be great for game viewing, travelers should be aware that the weather conditions can be unpredictable, experiencing both sunshine and rainfall.

The wet season months of December to April bring with them new life - a lush vegetation, newborn babies, and high predator interaction. The days are generally sunny and warm, but can change in an instance as the clouds pullover and burst. These rain showers are usually short and heavy. The wet season is renowned for its incredible bird watching opportunities and many lodges and camps like to offer reduced rates as the reserve is a lot quieter. The months of January and February do generally experience the most rainfall.
