[Updated May 2026]
The ten most-booked luxury lodges across the Greater Kruger ecosystem over the last twelve months, drawn only from properties whose published rates place them in the upper tier for the region. The result is a working luxury list, not a wish list, and not a popularity list that drifts down-market.
The Greater Kruger spans the national park itself and the unfenced private reserves on its borders: Sabi Sand, Thornybush, Timbavati, Manyeleti, Klaserie and Balule. Wildlife moves freely across all of them, which is what makes this part of southern Africa one of the densest and most reliable game-viewing areas on the continent. The lodges below all sit in the upper price band for their respective reserves, and most are routinely fully booked in the May to September dry season.
Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge
Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge sits within the Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve in the Sabi Sand, and is built into a natural slope so that almost nothing of it is visible from the surrounding bush. Twelve suites face out across the reserve through floor-to-ceiling glass, each with a private plunge pool and butler. Below the main lodge sits an underground wine cellar holding more than 6,000 bottles, alongside the Amani Spa and a Zen garden.
The Sabi Sand carries the Big Five and is one of the most consistently productive areas in southern Africa for leopard. Game drives are twice daily in open vehicles with a ranger and tracker, and the unfenced boundary with Kruger National Park means wildlife moves across both areas. Children twelve and over are welcome.

Lion Sands Ivory Lodge
Ivory Lodge sits on the confluence of the Sabie and Sand Rivers within the private Lion Sands Game Reserve in the Sabi Sand. Eight one-bedroom villas line the riverbank, each with a private deck, plunge pool, and direct sightlines onto the water. The two-bedroom Fish Eagle Villa adds a personal chef, field guide and game-viewing vehicle for families or small groups travelling together.
Stays are fully inclusive, from premium beverages and laundry to twice-daily drives in unfenced territory shared with Kruger National Park. The Sabi Sand is well known for resident leopards along the Sabie River, and the river frontage is among the most sought-after positions in the reserve. Children ten and over are welcome on game drives.

“Shann was extremely helpful in advising us and getting a great price for the Safari extension of our trip. She beat a price of the all inclusive trip and was able to extend our stay at Lion Sands Lodge an extra night. Wonderful service by Shann Shaw.”

MalaMala Rattray’s Camp
Rattray’s Camp occupies a forested bend of the Sand River within the 13,300-hectare MalaMala Game Reserve, which shares the longest unfenced border of any private reserve with Kruger National Park. Eight freestanding suites face the river or a waterhole, each with a private plunge pool, outdoor shower and viewing deck. The reserve is one of the original Sabi Sand concessions and has been operating since the 1920s.
Game drives traverse a reserve that holds historically high big-cat density, with leopard sightings particularly reliable along the river. Rattray’s caps numbers at sixteen guests and is adults-only unless reserved exclusively, in which case children twelve and over are welcomed. Stays include drives, walks, all meals and most beverages.

“Safari.com's friendly and professional assistance in arranging a trip to MalaMala and Lukimbi Safari Lodge at short notice for myself, my son and grandson was invaluable. We communicated by email and telephone with our agent, Dolan, who was always available despite the time difference between South Africa and the US.”

Royal Malewane
Royal Malewane sits in the Thornybush Private Nature Reserve, adjoining Kruger National Park, and is the founding property of The Royal Portfolio. The Lodge began life as the Biden family’s holiday home and was converted into six Luxury Suites and the larger Africa House and Royal Suites, each with a private deck, pool and butler service.
The reserve is known within the industry for fielding the most senior guiding team in southern Africa, with a higher concentration of Master Trackers and FGASA-qualified rangers than any comparable property. Twice-daily game drives cover the Thornybush, complemented by guided bush walks. Royal Malewane welcomes children of all ages and supports the Sigagule Crèche community programme through The Royal Portfolio Foundation.

Cheetah Plains
Cheetah Plains operates as three exclusive-use Bush Houses inside the western Sabi Sand. Each house holds four suites, sleeps up to eight guests, and is taken privately, complete with a dedicated chef, butler and ranger. Houses share central facilities only at the perimeter, so a single family or group has the property to themselves throughout their stay.
The lodge runs an entirely electric game-viewing vehicle fleet and operates under concession rights that cap shared sightings to two vehicles, which is unusual for the Sabi Sand and improves both wildlife behaviour and the photography. Children of all ages are welcome subject to group composition. Predator sightings, particularly leopard and lion, are reliable across the reserve year-round.

Londolozi Tree Camp
Tree Camp is the smallest and most exclusive of Londolozi’s five camps, with six suites raised among the ebony trees on a private concession of the Sabi Sand. Each suite has wraparound glass, a four-poster bed, indoor and outdoor showers and a private plunge pool. Londolozi has run on this land for five generations and is widely credited with refining the open-vehicle leopard-tracking model that the Sabi Sand is now known for.
Drives are twice daily in unfenced territory shared with the wider reserve, and bush walks are available. Tree Camp is adults-only at sixteen and over unless booked exclusively. Stays include drives, walks, all meals, drinks, the Cubs Den children’s programme when the camp is taken privately, and laundry.

Singita Boulders Lodge
Singita Boulders sits on the banks of the Sand River within Singita’s 18,000-hectare concession of the Sabi Sand. The lodge runs seven River Suites along the riverbank, three Bush Suites and two Family Suites, each with private plunge pool and game-viewing deck. Singita’s conservation arm operates an Anti-Poaching Canine Unit on the property which guests are invited to visit.
The Sand River frontage attracts continuous wildlife movement, and Singita’s low-impact guiding model maintains very low vehicle density across the concession. Boulders welcomes children ten and over, with a Mini Rangers programme covering tracking, bush survival and astronomy. Drives, walks, gourmet meals and an extensive South African wine list are included.

Singita Lebombo Lodge
Singita Lebombo sits on a private 15,000-hectare concession on the remote eastern boundary of Kruger National Park, looking down on the confluence of the Sweni and N’wanetsi rivers from a cliffside Afro-chic structure of glass and steel. Open-sided loft suites cantilever over the gorge, each with floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides and a private plunge pool.
The concession is one of only a handful of private operations inside Kruger’s national park boundary, granting access to terrain otherwise reserved for self-drive day visitors. Game drives, guided walks, fitness studio, gallery and the conservation-focused Singita School of Cooking all sit within the lodge. Children ten and over are welcome.

“These guys get 10/10. I have booked with them a few times. To Kruger National Park, including both public and private (concession) camps, flights and car hire. Their senior agent, Dolan is exceptional. Nothing is too much trouble. Attention to detail, transparency, easy to deal with.”

Silvan Safari Lodge
Silvan Safari Lodge sits in a quiet pocket of the Sabi Sand, raised among forest canopy along the Manyeleti riverbed. The lodge runs six luxury suites and the family-friendly Leadwood Suite, each with a private plunge pool positioned to face the river below. Suites are pod-like, glass-fronted and architecturally distinct from the more traditional bushveld lodges nearby.
Game drives go out twice daily in open vehicles fitted with Swarovski binoculars, with bush walks and night drives also on offer. The Sabi Sand’s reputation for unhurried, high-quality leopard sightings holds in this section, and elephant visits to the lodge’s plunge pools are not uncommon. Children twelve and over are welcome.

AndBeyond Tengile River Lodge
Tengile River Lodge is the newest of andBeyond’s Sabi Sand properties, set on a bend of the Sand River with nine spacious suites raised off the ground on stilts. Construction uses thatch, stone and timber alongside solar power to reduce the lodge’s footprint, and each suite has indoor and outdoor showers, a sunken outdoor lounge and a lap pool overlooking the river.
Twice-daily game drives operate within the broader Sabi Sand, which is celebrated for its leopards and supports more than 300 recorded bird species. The Sand River frontage draws elephants, hippos and antelope to the lodge during the dry season. Children twelve and over are welcome, with two inter-leading suites available for families.
