When to go, by season

Botswana's seasons are subtle, and the best region to visit shifts through the year. The map shows where each one comes into its own.

The flood (May to August)

Water that fell as rain in the Angolan highlands reaches the north, and the Okavango Delta and the Chobe riverfront are at their best. This is the season for mokoro and boat safaris, with game gathering along the channels and the river.

The peak dry (September to October)

The pans dry out and wildlife concentrates on permanent water, making this the most reliable time for big game. The Moremi Game Reserve is at its peak, and the Savuti Marsh comes into its own.

The emerald, or green, season (November to March)

The first rains turn the south green. Migrant birds arrive, the herds calve, and the desert reserves of the Kalahari and the Makgadikgadi Pans offer their best game viewing of the year, with Botswana's largest zebra migration and breeding flamingos.
