The Details

Pel's Post sits in the Makuleke Concession at the northernmost corner of Kruger National Park, on the border with Zimbabwe and Mozambique. This is one of the wildest and most diverse pockets of the park, a landscape of towering baobabs, fever-tree forests, sandstone gorges and riverine bush along the Luvuvhu River.

The camp lies just downstream of its sister property, The Outpost, closer to the river and tucked away for privacy. Dawn here is greeted by the call of the African fish eagle, and the concession's low traffic means game drives are rarely shared with other vehicles.

The whole property sleeps eight and can be reserved suite by suite or taken over entirely, which suits families and small groups looking for a private safari without the scale of a larger lodge.

Accommodation

Four luxurious suites sit on the river side of the camp, each with a king-size bed, an open-plan bathroom with both indoor and outdoor showers, an oversized bathtub, a well-stocked mini-bar and a generous wooden deck overlooking the Luvuvhu River.

Like The Outpost, each suite is open to the elements on three sides, with state-of-the-art retractable, remote-controlled screens in place of walls. The effect is an immersive wilderness stay without sacrificing comfort or privacy.

Game Drives

Guests head out on two game drives a day in open safari vehicles, with sundowners and snacks on the afternoon drive. Sightings range across general plains game, elephant and buffalo herds along the river, leopard in the rocky kopjes and a remarkable bird list that includes the elusive Pel's fishing owl after which the camp is named.

When the camp is booked on exclusive use, a private game vehicle is included so guests can set their own pace and pick their own routes through the concession.

Dining

All meals are included and served by a dedicated hospitality team. Settings rotate between the main deck above the river, the boma and bush locations depending on weather and the mood of the day, and menus reflect the slow-safari pace of the camp.
