Mauritius

The Indian Ocean at its most effortless.

A tropical Indian Ocean island of white beaches, turquoise lagoons and vibrant coral reefs, perfect for pairing with an African safari.

Mauritius

Mauritius

The polished island escape

Mauritius is the Indian Ocean at its most effortless: direct long-haul flights, immaculate resorts strung along reef-calmed lagoons, golf, spas and service culture refined over decades. After the dust and dawn starts of a Southern African safari, it is the softest possible landing.

The island runs from grand-dame luxury to barefoot chic; our comparison of Mauritius's luxury resorts maps the field.

Read more about Mauritius
Mauritius or Zanzibar?
Mauritius for polish: resort infrastructure, direct flights, golf and honed service, the natural finish to a South African itinerary. Zanzibar for character: Swahili history, dhows and proximity to East Africa's safari circuits. Match the island to the safari you are pairing it with.
When is the best time to visit?
May to December is the cooler, drier season and the safest bet; January to March is cyclone season with hot, humid days between storms. The island is genuinely year-round by resort standards.
Which coast should I choose?
The north and west are calmer, sunset-facing and best for swimming year-round; the east catches the trade winds, beloved of kitesurfers and cooler in summer; the south is wilder and more dramatic. Resorts cluster accordingly.
Is Mauritius better for honeymoons or families?
Both, by design. The island splits cleanly between adults-focused romance resorts and full-service family properties with kids' clubs; there is no compromise required, just the right booking.
How does it pair with a safari?
Direct flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town make it the classic post-safari week for Southern Africa. Bush first, beach second; four to seven island nights depending on the safari's intensity.
Do I need a visa?
Most nationalities receive free entry on arrival for tourism with an onward ticket and accommodation booked. Mauritius is malaria-free, a genuine advantage for families.
