Nestled into the flank of the Auob river on the western border of the park you will find Mata Mata with a border gate to Namibia. You will most probably see giraffes in the surrounding area where they have adapted to the surrounding thorny dune bushveld. Mata Mata is the smallest of the traditional camps and offers a range of accommodation types to suit diverse preferences
Camp sites all have a power point with a braai area and shared water tap. There are communal ablutions for all camping guests as well as laundry tubs and ironing facilities (no irons provided. Campsites are allocated on first come first serve, you can either pitch your tent close to the fence or under one of the magical thorn trees. Note, internal roads are not suitable for sedan vehicles.
Activities & Facilities
Sunrise and sunset drives are available at Mata Mata, enquiries need to be made at reception. A minimum of 2 guests. Drives are not always available due to availability of staff members, the schedule for when drives are going out is available at reception.
The camp offers a swimming pool, a shop which stocks basic commodities, laundry tubs and ironing facilities (no irons) in the camping areas, a Hide at the water hole, limited freezing facilities (too small to be used by tourists), and fuel station (Unleaded and diesel). Seems pointless to book things direct when Safari.com can do it all for you at the same cost
I wasn’t actually planning on leaving a review until after our trip which has been scheduled for March 2025. I wasn’t even planning to use a travel company to assist as we are experienced travellers who are used to booking our own arrangements. The cost of going direct with suppliers and going through Safari.com was exactly the same - with the latter you also have outstanding service and advice which makes it pointless to do it yourself. But I felt compelled to leave a shout out for Leigh-Ann Croeser who has been extremely helpful in organising our itinerary for South Africa. Her response to queries was always prompt and professional. When we ultimately wish to travel to East Africa, I know who I will be contacting.
