Top 5 in the Western Cape & Karoo
The western leg of the route is closer than most travellers expect. Gondwana and Botlierskop sit just off the N2 near Mossel Bay, and Sanbona lies about three hours from Cape Town in the Little Karoo. Samara is deeper into the Great Karoo outside Graaff-Reinet, and pairs as naturally with the Eastern Cape end of the route as with the western.
Gondwana Private Game Reserve
Gondwana covers 11,000 hectares of mountain fynbos outside Mossel Bay, one of very few places anywhere that free-roaming Big 5 share a landscape with proteas, Cape mountain zebra and bontebok. It is an easy four-hour drive from Cape Town, which makes it the natural first safari stop on a self-drive Garden Route itinerary.
We book the Gondwana Black Rhino Villa, an exclusive-use villa with a personal chef and host, a private field guide and your own game-drive vehicle, from ZAR 16,950 pps/night all-inclusive in the summer season (October to April). For South African residents, winter brings the year’s best value: ZAR 11,000 pps/night from July to September, a full ZAR 5,950 below the summer rate.
It was such a pleasure to deal with Pascal. He was very helpful in advising us on the best safari for our large group of 11. He organised both the safari and transport to and from Gondwana. Pascal was always contactable and promptly responded to all my questions. Can’t thank him enough. We are all looking forward to our visit to South Africa.

Samara Karoo Reserve
Samara restores 27,000 hectares of the Plains of Camdeboo in the Great Karoo outside Graaff-Reinet. Cheetah returned here in 2004 after more than a century’s absence, lion and elephant followed in 2019, and the reserve’s winter days are among the most reliable in South Africa for tracking aardvark. Rates start from ZAR 17,800 pps/night, all-inclusive of meals, all beverages, a daily game drive and activities.
The 2026 Special: stay three nights at Samara and pay for two, on new bookings travelling between 1 June and 30 September 2026. That takes the effective rate to ZAR 11,870 pps/night.
Botlierskop Private Game Reserve
Embark on an eco-friendly and exceptional safari venture to the luxurious Botlierskop Private Game Reserve. Here, breathtaking river, savannah, and mountain views set the backdrop for your Garden Route getaway. Whether you are on a romantic retreat, bonding with family, or reconnecting with friends, the Botlierskop Tented Lodges open you up to adventure, discovery, and uninterrupted experiences in nature.
Are you combining a Cape Town holiday with a Garden Route safari? Botlierskop Tented Lodges are conveniently located in the Western Cape near George, making it easy to include in a road-trip itinerary. Remember, SAFARI.COM are here to tailor your tour to your exact requirements.
Although every luxury tent differs slightly, you can look forward to indoor and outdoor showers, indoor fireplaces, private decks, and elegant furnishings. Guests are treated to gourmet meals at the reserve’s Fireplace Restaurant, and can also book spa treatments at the reserve’s wellness centre.
The Wildlife: Unforgettable safari adventures await visitors to the Botlierskop Game Reserve. Guided game drives seek out the African Big 5, and bush walks through the plains are perfect for photographing, birdwatching, or simply appreciating the finer details of an intimate safari experience. Near Botlierskop River, you may see hippos enjoying their time, find lizards at play, or spot a variety of rare waterbirds.
Why We Love It: At SAFARI.COM, we’re all about sustainable tourism. Botlierskop integrates habitat and wildlife restoration with luxury safari experiences. This means guest visits support ethical conservation and community upliftment, for truly meaningful adventures in Africa.
Botlierskop Tented Lodge starts from ZAR 8,495 pps/night, all-inclusive of meals, local beverages and minibar, conservation fees and unlimited activities including two daily game drives.
Booking a family safari for a group of 17 people is no easy feat. Izanne Meyer helped us set up an exciting and amazing itinerary for us in a matter of 9 days. I could chat with her on WhatsApp and all our queries were promptly answered. Her passion and friendliness is a bonus. I found the Safari.com platform consumer friendly and their service streamlined. We are looking forward to our 16 day fun filled safari with our children and grandchildren.

Sanbona Dwyka Tented Lodge
Sanbona spreads across 58,000 hectares of the Little Karoo beneath the Warmwaterberg, about three hours from Cape Town, and is best known for its free-roaming white lions. Dwyka Tented Lodge is its most dramatic address: nine tented suites set in a horseshoe bend of ancient Karoo rock, from ZAR 10,730 pps/night including meals, selected beverages, two daily game drives and guided wilderness walks.
The 2026 Special: book three consecutive nights at any of Sanbona’s luxury lodges between April and September 2026 and receive a 10% discount.
Safari.com has done an amazing job organizing our second family visit to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve. The staff are professional, responsive and gracious. The process was seamless and beyond our expectations. Shann, Nikita and Caileen were lovely to work with.

Sanbona Tilney Manor
Tilney Manor is the reserve’s restored homestead, a small Cape Dutch lodge with long views over the plains, from ZAR 9,535 pps/night on the same inclusive basis. Travelling with children? Gondwana Family Lodge (from ZAR 9,845) is Sanbona’s dedicated family option, and the same three-night special applies at all three lodges.
Have just organised through Safari.Com for a 1 night stay at Sanbona - Tilney Manor. My initial contact was answered promptly by Cearl Marney who assisted me in choice of stay and once decided proceeded to book us in. Outstanding customer service from first contact.

Top 5 in the Eastern Cape
At the eastern end of the route, within an easy drive of Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), the Eastern Cape’s malaria-free reserves turn a Garden Route road trip into a full safari. This is where the 2026 specials are concentrated, and most of them reward stays of three nights or longer between May and September.
Shamwari Private Game Reserve
Experience luxury and leisure at the Garden Route’s exclusive, malaria-free Shamwari Eagles Crag Lodge. This 25,000-hectare reserve tells an African story of conservation, connection, and the authentic beauty of the wild. As an award-winning lodge, guests can look forward to modern accommodation in one of nine private glass-and-stone suites. Each suite has its own plunge pool and viewing deck, with stunning vistas across the surrounding valley.
Days here run to the safari rhythm: sunrise and sunset game drives and bush walks led by passionate rangers, spa treatments in the quiet middle hours, and dinner outdoors under clear skies. Families with young children are welcome, with activities for all ages.
The Wildlife: Shamwari Eagles Crag Lodge is home to more than 250 bird species and diverse wildlife. Look out for the Big 5, cheetah, and plenty of antelope species, including springbok, eland, and kudu. Some rare species you may spot include the shy caracal, bat-eared fox, honey badger, or black-backed Jackal. On night drives, aardvark and aardwolf may emerge from the darkness, and are always interesting to observe.
Why We Love It: This Garden Route lodge allows guests to exist harmoniously in nature, taking in the wild without compromising on luxury. The remarkable Shamwari Foundation uplifts local communities while protecting wildlife and biodiversity. We highly recommend arranging a visit to the Shamwari Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre during your stay, to bear witness to the care and compassion that goes into each animal’s recovery journey.
Eagles Crag starts from ZAR 20,520 pps/night full board with game drives and guided walks included; Riverdene Family Lodge, the reserve’s family base, starts from ZAR 16,550.
The 2026 Special: stay four or more consecutive nights between May and September 2026 and receive 10% off accommodation.
We highly recommend Lynn Bowers at Safari.com. We had partially booked our family safari trip to celebrate our son’s 18th and were struggling to sort out various other elements. With Lynn’s knowledge, efficiency and professionalism she had the second half of our trip sorted in no time.

An African sanctuary exists in the heart of the bush, within the Amakhala 5-Star Bush Lodge. Picture this: your stay in a luxury tent with a thatched roof, wooden floors, and tented walls. Before you, a private viewing deck overlooks a watering hole, and wildlife roam freely across vast savannahs. Enjoy your private deck and plunge pool under quiet skies, and take in the magical surroundings at your own pace.
The Amakhala Game Reserve is malaria-free, and conservation efforts include rewilding and habitat restoration, as well as community upliftment and education. In addition to game drives and guided bush walks, guests can also enjoy the lodge’s lounge, bar, and outdoor boma area. The Wildlife: There is no shortage of wildlife to discover during your safari adventure. The Big 5, cheetah, giraffe, and zebra are frequently spotted. On horseback, you can move silently through nature and enjoy a unique perspective of game viewing in Africa, led by an expert guide.
Amakhala 5-Star Bush Lodge starts from ZAR 9,320 pps/night all-inclusive; the current offer brings the effective rate to ZAR 6,220.
Better than expected. This is the first time I've used a travel service. Nerine developed an itinerary that was exactly what we were looking for, within our budget and much faster and easier than what I could come up with independently.
– Deborah
Soak up the full safari experience at the inviting and malaria-free Amakhala Safari Lodge, a Garden Route favourite. Enjoy sundowners on your private deck with views of roaming wildlife and the striking natural landscapes.
The Wildlife: As we covered further up, wildlife at the Amakhala Game Reserve is abundant and marvellous. Situated along the banks of Bushman’s River, this welcoming safari lodge blends the bush and the beach for an amazing Garden Route experience. This is due to how the game reserve connects to the sea, and how the riverside accommodation feels both tranquil and exciting. The Garden Route is synonymous with its diverse landscapes, and Kariega captures this perfectly.
Accommodation in one of ten thatched suites offers views of either the river or vibrant bushveld. Each suite is spacious and contemporary; with high-end finishes you will love.
