Chobe National Park
Safaris built around Chobe National Park.
Botswana's oldest reserve in the country's north, home to Africa's largest elephant herds and unfenced concessions where wildlife roams freely.
Chobe National Park
Africa's elephant capital
Chobe National Park holds Africa's largest concentration of elephants, with well over 100,000 moving through the park and its surrounding concessions. The Chobe riverfront is the headline act: afternoon boat cruises bring you within metres of herds drinking and bathing along the Chobe River, while hippo, crocodile and African skimmer nest on the floodplain. It is one of the very few reserves where water-based game viewing rivals the classic open-vehicle drive.
Beyond the riverfront, the park extends south into Savuti, famous for its predator concentrations and the seasonal Savuti Channel, and west into Linyanti, a remote concession known for large elephant herds, wild dog and sable antelope. Accommodation ranges from established riverside lodges to luxury houseboats and intimate tented camps deep in the bush.
- How do I get to Chobe National Park?
- Fly direct to Kasane from Johannesburg, or land at Victoria Falls Airport and transfer by road in approximately 90 minutes. Our safari specialists arrange all flights, border crossings and transfers.
- Chobe or the Okavango Delta: which should I choose?
- Chobe excels at river-based game viewing, vast elephant herds and easy access from Kasane or Victoria Falls, with lodges from $600 per person per night. The Delta is the choice for fly-in exclusivity and mokoro excursions. Most guests combine two to three nights in each for the full Botswana experience.
- How many nights do I need in Chobe?
- Two to three nights on the Chobe riverfront is the standard recommendation, giving you time for both boat and vehicle safaris. If you want to explore Savuti or Linyanti as well, add a further two to three nights in those concessions.
- What does a Chobe safari cost?
- Lodges on the Chobe riverfront start from $600 per person sharing per night on a fully inclusive basis. Rates vary by season and property, with the luxury houseboats and Linyanti camps at the higher end. Our safari specialists will build a package matched to your budget.
- Is Chobe good for families and first-time safari-goers?
- Absolutely. The boat cruises are gentle and engaging for all ages, Kasane is well connected and the riverfront lodges offer an accessible introduction to safari without long bush flights or remote airstrips. Several properties welcome children with dedicated family programmes.

Chobe or the Okavango Delta?
This is the question most first-time Botswana visitors ask, and the honest answer is that the two experiences are quite different. Chobe leads with river cruises, enormous elephant herds, easy road access from Kasane and a lower entry price, with lodges from $600 per person per night. The Okavango Delta offers fly-in exclusivity, mokoro excursions through pristine channels and a sense of remoteness that Chobe's busier riverfront cannot match. Most guests who have the time combine two to three nights on the Chobe riverfront with three nights in the Delta for the full contrast.
When to go
The dry season from May to October delivers the most concentrated wildlife viewing along the Chobe River, with August to October the peak months. Temperatures climb sharply in September and October, but the trade-off is extraordinary density of game at the remaining water sources. The green season from November to April brings migrating zebra to Savuti, outstanding birding and lower rates, though some secondary roads may become impassable after heavy rain.
Getting there
Fly to Kasane from Johannesburg (direct flights available) or land at Victoria Falls Airport in Zimbabwe and transfer by road in approximately 90 minutes, crossing at the Kazungula border post. This proximity to the Falls is one of Chobe's great advantages: it is the only major Big Five park you can pair with Victoria Falls in a single day's travel. Our safari specialists arrange all flights, border crossings and transfers.
