The Serengeti's 1.5 million wildebeest, 400,000 zebra and 200,000 gazelle move in a continuous clockwise loop through the ecosystem. Timing your visit to the right region is the single most important decision you will make.

- Serengeti or Masai Mara: which should I choose?
- They are part of the same ecosystem, and the migration crosses between them. The Serengeti is roughly ten times larger and far less crowded, with calving (January to March) and Grumeti crossings (June to July) happening only on the Tanzania side. The Mara River crossings in August to October occur on both sides. For a quieter, more varied experience, we generally recommend the Serengeti.
- How many nights do I need in the Serengeti?
- Three to four nights in one region gives you a thorough experience. If you want to follow the migration across two regions, six to seven nights split between two camps is ideal. Our safari specialists can match camps to your travel dates.
- What does a Serengeti safari cost?
- Camps start from USD 235 per person per night at explorer level and run to USD 4,300 at the top end. A mid-range three-night stay typically costs USD 1,200 to USD 1,480 per person per night, fully inclusive of game drives, meals, drinks and park fees. Fly-in transfers from Arusha add roughly USD 300 to USD 500 per person return.
- When is the best month to see the migration?
- It depends on what you want to witness. January to March for the calving season on the southern plains. June to July for Grumeti River crossings. August to October for the dramatic Mara River crossings in the north. November to December for quieter green-season rates as the herds move south.
- Is the Serengeti suitable for families?
- Several camps accept children, and a fly-in safari avoids long road transfers. Look for camps with family suites or tents and dedicated children's programmes. Our safari specialists can recommend the right camp for your children's ages.
- Do I need a visa for Tanzania?
- Most nationalities require a visa, which can be obtained online through the Tanzanian e-visa portal before departure. Processing usually takes a few business days. Our safari specialists will confirm requirements based on your passport and provide the link when we send your travel documents.

January to March: calving on the southern plains
The herds gather on the short-grass plains around Ndutu and the southern Serengeti. Roughly 8,000 calves are born every day during the peak, drawing lion, cheetah and hyena in extraordinary concentrations. This is the best time for predator-prey photography. Camps positioned here include Nasikia Mobile Migration Camp (from USD 415 per person per night) and the mobile camps that follow the herds south.
April to May: the long rains and the push north-west
Rains green up the central Serengeti and the herds begin drifting north-west towards the Western Corridor. April is the quietest month in the park and rates drop accordingly. Some camps close during the heaviest rains, but Dunia Camp (from USD 1,200) and Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti (from USD 1,080) in the central Serengeti remain open year-round.
June to July: the Western Corridor and Grumeti crossings
The herds mass along the Grumeti River, and the first dramatic crossings begin. Crocodiles patrol the shallows while thousands of wildebeest attempt the ford. August to October: northern Serengeti and Mara River crossings
The main event. The herds reach the Mara River in the northern Serengeti, and the crossings here are the most filmed wildlife spectacle on earth. Thousands of wildebeest plunge into the river, navigating strong currents and crocodiles. Camps in this region include Singita Mara River Tented Camp and Singita Sasakwa Lodge (from USD 3,220 and USD 3,525 respectively), Sayari Camp (from USD 2,250), andBeyond Klein's Camp (from USD 1,720) and Lemala Nanyukie Lodge (from USD 1,480).
November to December: the return south
Short rains draw the herds back towards the central and southern Serengeti, completing the loop. Green-season rates apply at most camps, and the park is quieter. Mobile camps such as Ubuntu Migration Camp (from USD 1,080), Olakira Migration Camp (from USD 1,490) and andBeyond Serengeti Under Canvas (from USD 1,640) reposition to follow the herds.
How to get there
Most visitors fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK), then take a scheduled light-aircraft transfer to one of several Serengeti airstrips. Flight time is roughly 90 minutes. Driving from Arusha takes eight to ten hours via the Ngorongoro Gate, which is why almost all luxury itineraries use fly-in transfers.
