Overview

Situated at the southernmost tip of Africa, where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet, Agulhas National Park provides comfortable lodging surrounded by the pristine coastal landscape of the Agulhas National Park. Designed with environmental conservation in mind, the intimate camp is located near the famous Cape Agulhas Lighthouse, which overlooks the shipwrecks of some of the 250 vessels run aground by the notorious ‘Cape of Storms’. Accommodation is provided by cozy cottages in five locations of Agulhas National Park, which are the restored farmhouses of these historic sites.

The Park is an important component of the Cape Floral Kingdom, which is the richest of the world’s six plant kingdoms. In addition to the rich natural features, shell middens are archaeological treasure troves that provide insight into the ancient hunter gather Khoisan people who once lived here and majestic Southern Right whales can be seen during their breeding season.

Accommodation

The Agulhas Rest Camp is ideally situated to experience the best of what the ‘Cape of Storms’ has to offer.
Accommodation consists of four two-bed and four four-bed self-catering chalets. Two-bed chalets are comprised of two separate bedrooms with one en-suite bedroom and either two single beds or a double bed in each. The four-bed self-catering chalets have either two en-suite bedrooms, each with either two single beds or two single beds and one double bed. Daily housekeeping is included except for washing of dishes.

All chalets are equipped with:

- Ceiling fans
- Fully equipped kitchen, 2 plate stove (no oven)
- Microwave & fridge
- Open plan lounge / kitchen area
- Patio & barbeque facilities
- Sleeper couch only suitable for children under 12
- Crockery, cutlery, cooking, utensils, fresh linen, towels and soap.

Lagoon House

Lagoon House sleeps eight in a total of four bedrooms – two in the house and two with a separate entrance, which each have en suite bathrooms with a toilet and shower. The dining room, which seats eight, is complemented by a fully equipped kitchen, or guests can choose to make use of the barbeque facilities on the patio. There is a lockup garage for one car.

Rhenosterkop Guest Cottages

31km from the Agulhas Cape Lighthouse off the Struisbaai / Elim road, Rhenosterkop’s accommodation takes the shape of three historic cottages situated on the old homestead of one of the oldest farms in Strandveld, which was established in 1742. There is room for four guests in two of the cottages, while the third cottage sleeps two, and each cottage can be separately reserved. Solar panels provide energy for lighting and gas is used for cooking, hot water & refrigeration.

Rietfontein Guest Cottages

On the southern slope of Soetanysberg, overlooking the southern shore, lies the historic homestead of Rietfontein, one of the oldest of the Strandveld farms. Three two-bed units, each with their own bathrooms and kitchen facilities, and a refurbished barn with one two-bed unit provide accommodation.

Bergplaas Guest House

The newest of the farms, the spacious Bergplaas Guest House consists of five bedrooms, four of which have en suite bathrooms with either showers or baths. One bedroom is suited for the mobility challenged. A spacious and fully equipped kitchen with a four plate stove, fridge and microwave allows large groups to be catered for.

Activities & Facilities

There are a number of activities available in the park and surrounding towns. Explore the local landscape with activities such as hiking trails, 4x4 trails, bird watching, whale watching (June to September), swimming, and rock and surf angling. The park offers a great diversity of flora with approximately 2000 species of indigenous plants, including 100 that are endemic to the area, and over 110 Red Data Book species.  Although most species bloom between May and September, there are flowers to be enjoyed in any season.

This is the southernmost tip of Africa (Agulhas), where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet officially at 34° 49’ 58" South and 20° 00’ 12’’ East. The rough seas off Cape Agulhas were treacherous for early explorers and a number of shipwrecks can be found along the coastline, including the wrecks of the Zoetendal, Birkenhead, Arniston and Meisho Maru 38. The nearby Bredasdorp Shipwreck museum showcases the stories and remnants of these fateful voyagers. The Cape Agulhas Lighthouse was built to aid the early explorers and is a museum, as well as the second oldest working lighthouse in southern Africa. Remains of ancient stone fish traps used by the Khoisan people can be seen to the east of the lighthouse.

While there are no facilities in the park, restaurants, pubs, shops, banks, and other facilities are available in the nearby towns of L’Agulhas, Struisbaai or Bredasdorp.

• The Southernmost tip of Africa
• Cape Agulhas Lighthouse & Museum

Wildlife

Cape Grysbok is one of the rarely occurring terrestrial mammals in the Agulhas National Park, grazing among the coastal vegetation, but the waters are frequented by calving Southern Right Whales from June through September as well as Cape Fur Seals, dolphins and porpoises. An extensive variety of birds may be spotted here, some of which are the Blue Crane and Secretary bird. Agulhas is the habitat of over 21 000 migrant and resident wetland birds. Robins and buntings are common, while the Cape Sugarbird, Victorin's Warbler and Orange-breasted Sunbird are delightful additions to any birder’s list.

The Agulhas Plain forms part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, famous for the unique and delicate fynbos vegetation that grows there. With some 100 endemic plant species and 2000 species of indigenous plants, as well as wetlands that house a range of vegetation and aquatic invertebrates, the area is one of incredible biodiversity.

KATHLEEN

We were a bit early for entering but were received with utmost friendliness and all explained courteously. At the entrance gate on arrival and departure we were treated like royalty visiting for the first time as if they were expecting and waiting for only us to arrive. Sanparks well done. This is how we came to know you The accommodation everything you could wish for.

John Crafford

Very nice chalet's in a wonderful setting.

J P CILLIERS

Outstanding accommodation. The furniture & equipment is first class.

DAVID BRUCE

This is the place along the coast where you are the closest to the sea and the comfort and caring staff makes this a venue not to be missed. This is also probably the Southern most holiday house in Africa--We were seven adults and all of us were in agreement that this is therapy for the soul and we should have stayed longer. Well done, Sanparks!

Bill Skinner

Marlise Streich

The cottage surrounds were undergoing building works and tidying up. Tariff should have been reduced accordingly. The area is very pleasant and remote, but little info is available of what can be seen or should be visited nearby. There was no info on the nearby wetlands and interesting looking meandering river, where canoes are available for use by visitors. Despite this being a Sanparks manged area. We enjoyed the cottage and the flamingos on the nearby salt pans.

Douglas Blaine

Very well appointed chalets. Appreciated DSTV because of French Open final and F1 GP! Lovely walks but would like to drive further west along the coast! Should have spent 2 nights at Agulhas, instead of 1! Sign posting in Agulhas itself not very clear.

Carol Hemsley

Had the most wonderful stay, have been telling our friends all about it

Pietro Corgatelli

A really lovely location and very comfortable and well cared for facility. A pleasure to visit. This was my 2nd time there, and I am sure I will return. Thanks very much!!!
