Guest Reviews for Punda Maria Restcamp

Come and experience the wildlife and wilderness that makes Africa such a special place - the memories made on safari will stay with you forever!

The food at the restaurant was amazing! the Venison Pie was too tasty! The Game drive with Patrick was very informative and he went out of his way to show us game. Excellent value for money . Can't wait to go again!

Very nice, clean place for overnight stay. Friendly Staff, good prices, very comfortable beds. Extremely recommended!

Mark Berowski

Punda Maria was a great camp with friendly staff and the bungalow was amazing.

Rudolph van Tonder

We really enjoyed our stay in the tent 5 and congratulate Bandile and his staff for their helpfulness and courtesy. We thought that we had left our binoculars at Pafuri Picnic spot and Bandile went out of his way to assist us. We are back in the tents just after Christmas.

MARIE-LOUISE VAN NIEKERK

We enjoyed our stay although it was very hot. Traffic in this area is a lot less and ideal if you want to rest and get away a bit. We have seen more elephant, buffalo and Nyala than we have ever seen before. A concern is that we went out via Phalaborwa Gate and in the week we have not seen even one Rhino.

Stoffel Kriel

Basic but awesome.

Tony Da Fonseca

What a great stay, so peaceful, friendly staff. Definitely worth a visit!

Our trip was one of the best memorable ones - priceless and absolute enjoyment. Those bungalows are what I needed to de-connect from the busy urban life. The night felt like a 24hour single night shot without any interruptions from the busy world. In future, I will definitely choose KNP bungalows over a 5-star city hotel.Everything was super and hassle-free, I will always treasure the trip. My home town Giyani is just 70 km from the Punda Maria Gate, but never slept in KNP, I always visited as a day-visitor to the park, but all has changed on how I treasure KNP as an absolute resting destination lately. Big ups guys!!!

Great.

This was the best accommodation of our two week trip through Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Easy, authentic and comfortable, a model for this type of travel experience

Carol Hall

Great little camp with friendly and professional staff. The tented camp was more than I expected and made for a trip with new experiences.

Dave Lucas

Splendid!

Vrou kla oor netheid van amblisie blok. Vir my was die "rustic" weer lekker. Die uitkyk by die watergat natuurlik n wenner. Moet net nie te veel verwag daar noord nie alhoewel elke ou wat die eerste keer Kruger toe gaan dit self moet gaan ondervind

George Tait

Enjoyable as always. Neat and clean facilities.

Melanie de Necker

The camp was great - overnight we heard lots of lions and elephants. The watering hole with hide was great to sit at night and watch and listen to the animals - we even saw the lions and elephants walking past the site. The drive was great, Patrick was really knowledgeable and explained everything to us - not just about the animals but some of the trees and other wildlife that there are in the parks. This was particularly memorable for us and became a highlight of our trip.

James Stanley

Always a pleasure to visit the the Kruger Park.

We had a great stay. Rooms were clean, accommodation good and all facilities excellent.

DORI MORENO

Ons hou van die kleiner, stiller kampe. Die water-gat by die kamp is 'n wenner. Ek sal beslis terug gaan.

John Frylinck

ANDRE DE LANGE

This camp is set in an ideal spot and very peaceful. Loved the visiting crested guinea-fowl.

Michael Martin

Nice camp, enjoyed the tented camp very much. food in restaurant was fine. Nice camp to stay in.

WILFRIED LAMPE

Overall it was a great trip with some great viewing.

John Mcginn

Staff were very friendly, ablutions exceptionally clean and serviced. Staff were well dressed friendly and energetic despite the heat. Thanks for a comfortable stay.

Kirsten Ludwig

The Northern area of Kruger is outstanding, beautiful trees, loads of buffalo, elephant and antelope. Punda Maria camp bungalows were very disappointing, they have not been upgraded for years, they are small and the plumbing was smelly. The restaurant food was very mediocre but extremely expensive for the poor quality! The communal braai area was good and the tented camp looked nice although we did not go into them. The reception service was very good.

JJJane WalkerJane Walker

Great service. Did not use the restaurant. Was very impressed with our tent accommodation.

STEPHEN PEATE

1. Online interaction is world class and I would say stands up to the best of international standards 2. Punda Maria, was very enjoyable and game viewing varied and plentiful 3. The infrastructure of the park is very good and maps that can be purchased at camp stores are easy to use and have valuable insights 4. I found the staff to be relatively aloof and at times rather ‘aggressive’, it often felt that they were doing you a favor. This is very different to what I have experienced in the past.

Like the remoteness and quietness. Not many vehicles.

Great!

The booking of the accom.was very poor from a relations point of view.2hRS. AFTER RECEIVING CONFIRMATION OF MY BOOKING I RECEIVED AN E-MAIL STATING THAT IF I HAD NOT PRODUCED PROOF OF PAYMENT WITHIN THE FOLLOWING 2HRS. MY BOOKING WOULD BE LOST.ALL THIS FROM A PERSON LIVING OUTSIDE OF S.A.The accomadation itself was average and I would go back again. Some suggestions:a)The one bedroom toilet did not work.b)No matches to light a fire or the gas stove and the shop was closed. Its and old camp and needs tender loving care.M.Walsh

Michael Walsh

The ablution blocks were very clean and neat and always hot water for shower.

Alwyn Prinsloo

No problems - Great

Freddy Nel

On my arrival at reception they did not have an indication on the computer system of my booking. The lady said it is not her problem and she can not help me I must contact the person who had maid the booking. She was totally unprofessional in handling my case. While I was busy trying to contact the agent who made the booking I over hear another problem with a customer for who she maid a wrong booking and then blame him for not checking his detail on the booking. The manager arrived there and solve the problem.

I had a good trip and stayed at the various Camping Sites. The roads both Tar and Dirt are in very poor condition from all my previous vists as thus able to make this comment, if in normal cars be aware of this especially on the Dirt Roads, I eventually stayed off them and missed a lt of viewing. The camps are getting run down, but the people are good and very helpful. I was disappointed that the camp Sites are not controlled and others take up more space that they are allocated or just used up two Sites and people were forced to miss out, others were obviously taking up two Power Points for Electricity and I had to miss out depite alsing them to unplug one Lead, rude and uncaring but them Kruger should police this aspect. There is a lot of noice in the Camps despite being asked to tone it down, Radios - Generator and boozing into the nights. Another Camping Only site had a couple with visitors and the loud attitude was not appreciated, we are there to the wild life and experice the wild night life, not some afrikaans couple shouting screaming their heads off and not caring when several others asked them quiet down.Over all a good trip despite the poor road attitude in blocking bother sides of the road when they see something of interest and others either cannot get a look in or pass them, another real difficulty.wsould I go again YES YES YES, but be aware and make some plans.

Graham Patterson

We loved the traditional quiet place although offering a superb pool and good camp site

Peter Altherr

My favourite camp. Like the historical old feeling of the camp. The tented camp is very nice even though a bit run down. Food is disappointing - embarrassing, if you take foreign visitors into account. I really hope you are not going to install a Wimpy or other franchise in this camp - just get your restaurant up to scratch!

MARIUS BOTHA

Although small a great rest camp to stay at.

JAN KOETSIER

It was my honemoon. I enjoy very much. I even manage to see 8 Lions on one day. The room was clean. I enjoy food. Thanks. Im tying to download my photos but I dont know how?

Fase

The ablution facilities were clean, but concerned when its peak season that the ablution facilities will not be enough for everyone. Also in peak season the electrical points will not be enough for everyone. Also the campsites should be clearly marked so that people do not take the space up of another camper's campsite.

Stacey-Lee Hercules

Generally we have been happy with our stay in Punda Maria camp. One night we slept in the tent and second night in the bungalow. Both accommodation had been clean and prepared for our stay. The food in the camp is very simple but ok. The stuff was friendly but big problem is with payment. Line usually doesn't work and they ask you for a cash. So we did so and problem started when I wanted to fill the tank of my car. Again line did not work and I was ask for a cash. I did not have enough to fill my car and our last day in the park have been spoiled. I think that people should be warn about this problem and bring a cash for payment.RegardsJozef Kolarovic

Those tents are just unbeatable, we've had the most wonderful time and Buffalo's on our doorstep.

Daniela Maurer

The camp appears a little old and facilities are not comparable with the southern camps but that is to be expected and not a slight on Punda Maria. Not a camp you visit every year, but always worth a visit every now and then!

Christo du Plessis

Very Good. Nice family cottage.

Clyde Botha

Poor camp: lack of power and water points. Shop poorly equipped. Not worth more than 2 nights stay.

Ray Cooper

Up to expectations except for entry onto the stoep of the bungalow where the roof is quite low - suggest you lower the stoep and build stpes from the stoep into the bungalow

The campsites were clean and neat. The main problem was the extreme noise made by the sun-beetles in the campsite. Although we accept this is a nature park, the excessive amount of sun-beetles that have accumulated in the trees in the camp is a health risk (high pitch well above the 100decibel level). This made it impossible to stay in the camp during the day. This forced us to cancel our second night at the camp site and we managed to get a booking at Tsendze again. Unfortunately they could not refund me for the night at Punda Maria and I had to pay extra for the night at Tsendze.

Steve Bothma

We love this cosy camp!

Gunvor Lundfelt

ons het dit baie geniet dankie, almal was vriendelik en die ontvangs by die hek was ook heerlik. ablusieblokke was netjies en skoon gewees net so die opwas plek. al teleurstelling wat daar was was die feit dat die swembad vir n 2de keer nie beskikbaar was nie. die kids wou na n rit gaan swem maar moes telleurgesteld terug kom en se dat die swembad nie in orde was nie. baie dankie verder vir als, dit was heerlik om weer die natuur te geniet.

MALANIE VAN BILJON

Overall very pleased with our stay and our first experience of tent accommodation was extremely pleasing. Our two criticisms of the camp itself would be :-1) The swimming pool was in a really poor state and should really have been shut as it could well have been a health hazard. We were not the only people to be appalled by it's condition and should you really advertise it's presence if you cannot keep it in a fit state.2) Many people who visit Punda are there for the birdlife and the bird bath is supposed to be an attraction. What a shame it was devoid of any water during our stay, how long would it take to remedy this?On the plus side the restuarant food was excellent and very good value, we really love the area and the peace and quiet it provides.

The self catering units are very small. The units amount to a tiny hotel room and not a self catering facility. Hence they are very over priced. We did not really enjoy having a unit that opened directly onto the main road through the camp, especially as we were travelling with toddler who wanted to run directly out of the unit. We realised that there is little that can be done about changing the layout of this old camp, but perhaps a warning could be given when guests make a booking. In our case we had told the booking agent that we were travelling with a toddler. A warning might have helped, but preferably he could have tried to book us into one of the back row units not directly on the road. There is a need for some more table or shelf type facilities on which to store and prepare food in the units. The slate ledge available was taken up with bags, food crates and suitcases. Please add more shelves, hooks and rails in the bathrooms for toiletry bags, clean and dirty clothes etcThe communal kitchen needs more than just two 2 plate hot plates. Some oven or microwave facility would be appreciated.More chairs and tables are needed in the communal braai area. The reception staff members were pleasant but not overwhelming in their welcome. We also suspect that the employees were making use of some of the guest facilities

It was the most enjoyable and relaxing weekend, thank you

ERROL MARNITZ

Camp Drainage big problem at perimeter. Flash flood nearly entered our tent - I had to dig drainage channels in pouring rain!General day to day maintenance/cleanliness poor.Ablutions inadequate - particularly in school holidays. Also need more frequent cleaning when busy.Garbage bins not emptied daily.

Bill Stephens

It was our first time up north. We had great weather and a wonderful time. Saw lots of animals and the biggest herd of buffalo (100+).Cant wait to go again!

Rinaldo Guelpa

Very nice camp and friendly staff.

Well maintained camp.

We stayed in Bungalow 12. The room is very small with inadequate space for dealing with food. However, the rooms are clean, the camp well looked after and we really enjoyed our stay.

Appears to be a well run camp.Air-conditioning was not working in shop & restaurant.Obstructed view points at dams and waterholes.Hide at Punda brilliant.

Roger Matthews

This was the most comfortable accommodation. We loved it and will be back. In March after the rains(we pray for rain every day) and again next August. We love the peace of this remote area. It's our favourite place on the planet.

Debbie van der Plank

The traffic during all hours of the night is very disturbing. Lots of small dead animals in road in the mornings. It seems like people have access between Pafuri and Punda gates all hours of the night - no control. Very concerned. Also concerned about the numerous waterholes that are empty or not working.

JJ De Villiers

All the camps we stayed at were really nice, but I do have to mention Skukuza - that was awful, terrible actually, so disappointing. We never did get a camp site, and none with electricity (which we paid for). It was crowded and cramped, we just parked our camper on the sidewalk next to a camp, we left a night earlier than we should have. The restaurant (tree) was one of the worst meals I have ever had, honestly it should never have been served like that, the chef should be 'in trouble' for that meal. Sweet potato glassy and cold, lamb cutlets very underdone, no butternut (as on the menu)- overall dry and un-edible. for the price it was really a ripoff, there were a number of people complaining, for the beautiful venue it really should be upgraded. The waiters, though very friendly were terribly unsuited for the job. The shop there was great. I will never go back to Skukuza again. The rest of the park was wonderful - Punda my favourite. Thank you

Jill Howitz

will definitely go back to this camping site. It was very good, but just needed more ablution blocks.

Arnoldus Schoombee

It was a wonderful time, however we had a power outage for almost 3/4 of an hour, with no provision in terms of candles or alternative lights in the chalets. The roof of the chalets at the entrance is unpractical, as well as the parking space. The bedspreads were very dirty, but the sheets were fine. Over-all it was very nice, except for the few hick-ups.

Sumari Haasbroek

Staff was very helpful and friendly. Everything was clean and no shortage of toilet paper in the ablusions.I had a lovely stay - will defnitely come again. Thanks!!

Anet Korff

Chalets with out a kitchenette is awful. They do have space to put in a shelf with microwave etc. A portable braai opposite the chalet would be great.

ann sears

The further from Skukuza, the better... Magical Crooks' Corner, the baobabs, good people among the visitors, good people among the staff, excellent night drive. Lots of rare animals - e.g. a caracal on a night drive. Very, very good. Would be nice to have a greater variety on the restaurant menu - after 4 days, you've eaten almost everything edible. But then, it's not about restaurants. Tent great; somewhat chilly early mornings.

Dr L S Kowalski

It was wonderful to visit the game reserve and see a large amount of animals (if not a large variety). We would definitely recommend the Park as a place to relax and unwind. It's just a pity there aren't as many roads to travel in the northern part of the Park as there are lower down.

Cathryn Davies

When we arrived, we thought that it would be not so nice as other camps. It did look old fashioned...BUT...That was what they wanted. Leave it in the 1935 years style, the year when they built this part of the park. The atmosphere was great and relaxed and the cabins were simple, but renovated and cosy and the airco was quiet!Nice to stay. There is no plates, knifes and so on, but the people at the restaurant were nice and let us borrow their stuff! Come and stay here at least two nights and go to "The garden of Eden", a little more to the north, to do some birdwatching.

Punda Maria:Tented Unit 7:The tent in general the best we have seen! The deck is stunning and we had some awesome evening visits by the genets and bushbaby.Kitchen basin leaks into cupboard as is in desperate need of repairs. The kettle leaks.Tin opener rusted beyond use due to water leak in kitchen basin.Only 3 of each crockery & cutlery, 4 required for 2 people as often more than 1 meal after unit is services.Microwave & toaster noticeably absent again.Monkey proof bin required on patio. In fact all the bins in the unit were not able to close as they are all broken.1 broken light and another missing globe.Extra blankets not in the unit.Braai broken and rusted. Needs to be replaced in it's entirety. Consider webber braais in all tented units.Reception very slow and crowded. We love Kruger and will be back, but felt that the small details were overlooked and the person stocking the unit does not think like a guest. I'm sure we are not the only guest who like toast for breakfast and might braai for 2 days as we will be going on a night drive, and just want to heat up our food when we return.

We were very pleased with the accommodations at both locations. The experience was perfect. We commend faculty and staff for the upkeep of the park. Later in our trip we found ourselves visiting a National Park in Kenya which cost twice as much to enter and was not nearly as impressive. There was trash around the picnic areas and we found ourselves missing Kruger! We'll be back!!

Well done a relatively lovely stay at Punda Maria, But I think the bungalows need upgrading and there needs to be more seating around the braai area.

Our main stay in the Kruger was 3 nights on the Nyalaland Trail which was a wonderful experience. We must commend you on a superb cook, Thomas and two outstanding guides Greg and Job. We were well looked after and were VERY satisfied.

1) Ablutions at Punda inadequate .

P.W. Koen

The ablution facilities at Punda rest camp are inadequate which results in blockages of sewerage systems . Otherwise it was in order .

Great time indeed and please keep up the good work!

Our first stay at the tent was very nice. The concept is good and it was comfortable. Staff members are friendly as usual (it is our third stay). Some suggestions:1) Frying pan was not good and would like to have a iron cast frying pan even you keep in your reception and we pay for a deposit.2) it would be nice if we can purchase wild meat in your shop if you cull them.Regards

Facilities neat & clean, roads not congested

We had a great time. the only negative is that at most of the camps the taps need new washers! We found that it was extremely difficult to turn off a lot of taps, which in it self as we are not a water rich country, very wasteful! Other wise we loved our time there. Looking forward to returning!!!!!

We found this to be the best camp in the entire park. Christo the manager was exceptional in his assistance and friendliness and as a result of his professional touch and efficiency in assisting us with a faulty electrical problem in late hours, has made an impact and we will return gladly to this venue! His friendliness in assistance and advice also made an everlasting impression!

It was the 1st time that we slept over in Punda Maria. Was very surprised with the tent-hut It was excellent.Maybe it is just time for new towels. W were only there for one night but the receptionist was clued up and the rest of the time there was nice.

Although a small camp very well situated, organised and friendly

Workers in punda speed with vehicles inside camping area making n lot of dust. Other wise exelend

Camp atmosphere the best. Please do not tamper with the overall ambience there. Trip to Parfuri was unforgettable.

As always a trip to the KNP is a very relaxing affair - on this trip it would have been helpful if we knew in advance that a lot of areas in the North were still closed following the January floods - perhaps some sort of alert could be given out when a booking is made to assist in planning day trips. Otherwise everything was great - Thank you.

Margaret Anderson

The camp is a little disappointing in relation to the other camps, in that the cottages are not seperate and on the verander outside our room we were very squashed with the other visitors. Everything was clean and well kept . Thank you.

Our first night in Kruger and we really enjoyed it. We took the circular route from the lodge in the evening and the following early morning and saw animals that we didn't see anywhere else in the park including a group of male then female nyala and sharpe's grysbok. The camp is small and charming. You really have the feel of getting away from it all. We spent a wonderful morning up at Klopperfontein watching elephants playing in the water and a whole host of supporting characters including herds of buffalo, zebra and eland all making their way down for a drink. The birdlife also entertained with a secretary bird flying overhead, 2 fish eagles coming into land and a saddle billed and woolly necked stork catching food that the elephants stirred up. Klopperfontein was certainly a Kruger highlight for us.

Anne Balfour

Fantastic!!! We really enjoyed every second!!

We came back from Mozambique and decided to sleep over at Punda maria, after two long days of driving we got to the camp and received friendly service from all staff! We also went on a sunset drive and found it very educational ( not the boring facts taken from the how to book) and relaxing. will definitely be going there again!

Eben van Schalkwyk

Our drive through Pafuri Gate and down to Punda in the afternoon of our arrival was greeted by a fantastic lightning storm to the north and brilliant sunset from the west. Evening padkos near camp with one hundred snorting, chewing, snarling buff' was another highlight. Punda Maria, set against a vegetation-smothered green hillside, lived up to its reputation as a 'trip back in time', styled in the older and perhaps gentler tradition of the Park. The following morning we were to discover that the Easter Bunny had left us a giant chocolate Elephant (pictured). I'll leave the rest of the trip up to your imagination. Lack of over-eager motorists was noticeable in the northern end as well...

Nice camp with staff that did a good job. The camp is smaller and therefore shop is not as well stored but that is understandable. The bungalows were beautiful and well planned.

My husband and I absolutely love Kruger and often try squeeze in a detour on our way down to Durban to visit family. Our last visit was perhaps the most disappointing one to date - we saw very few animals, which is par for the course on game holidays. (What saved the day was an amazing sighting of a very healthy male Sable!) What was the most disappointing was the staff service at Punda Maria whilst eating at their restaurant. A very aggressive teenage monkey attempted to attack me (I am 13 weeks pregnant) and then proceeded to jump from the tree onto a nearby table and stole food from the patrons - with our waiter watching and doing absolutely nothing! We reported it to the restaurant manager who had a very hard time convincing the duty manager to come and actually do something about the monkey. Whilst waiting for him, the monkey tried to attack yet again - fortunately I was not afraid of her and scared her off for good. The duty manager arrived a while later, when all the monkeys had disappeared. One cannot help but wonder what would happen if that monkey had bit one of us!Then, we stopped at Shingwedzi for a bite to eat and to withdraw some cash and were very disappointed at the staff attitude toward us in the curio shop. We experienced the same indifferent attitude at the Phalaborwa Gate curio shop.Despite the staff service, we still had a good stay in Kruger and will definitely try come back - the Kruger bug has bitten and bitten hard! I would like to note that the staff serving us at our check in for Tsendze (at Mopani) were a welcome relief from the surly faces encountered elsewhere.

Caravan park: Terrain very neglected. Swimming pool dirty, lawns unkept. Camp not well managed in comparison to others, especially the terrains all over. Serious decline since previous stay !!

Paul Neethling

The staff was probably the best we have encountered in the Kruger. Helpful, friendly and always keen to assist. Wonderful camp.

George van der Merwe

Another still well run camp with pleasant staff. No problem and thought the new water hole is wonderful. Thanks.

Hallo dis baie lekke daar Wil net vra dat hul die tente opknap seile baie los as die wind waai En die riool is skoon gemaak maar nie met grond bedek so dan is daar n erge reuk Sal weer gaan dankie

Bungalow BD2 booked for us was inhabitable due to stench from a blocked sewage drain. We refused to check in and subsequently was upgraded to another bungalow at no extra cost. Really enjoyed our overnight stay.

I would just like to make mention a particular staff member. Her name is Julia. I unwittingly left R200.00 in my shirt pocket. Julia did our washing for us , she found the money and returned it to me. She should be commended for her honesty, not without mention to all the other staff members could not fault anyone all happy helpful and extremely polite. I am proud to be a South African.
