Overview

For the camper who feels that an authentic camping experience relies on a no-nonsense approach, facilities like Tsendze are a welcome change from the luxury lodges and camp sites frequented by many others. Tsendze rustic camp lies only seven kilometers from the Mopani Rest Camp in the Kruger Park, and provides no frills camp site facilities to the public, with no electricity. Generators are also not allowed, thus ensuring minimum noise pollution, and guaranteeing an intimate, immersive camping trip.

Accommodation

Tsendze Rustic Campsite comprises of thirty tent or caravan sites, shaded by a variety of trees. No electricity points are provided. Sites make use of communal ablutions and cooking, and host a maximum of six persons per site. Each site is equipped with its own braai stand and rubbish bin, and one fresh water tap is shared per three sites. Specific areas in the camp may be reserved upon booking, depending on availability.

• Tsendze rustic campsite is managed from Mopani Camp, thus having no reception area. Guests are required to report to Mopani camp at least one hour prior to the closing of the gate for check-in, then enter Tsendze Rustic Campsite. Accommodation at Tsendze camp is well suited towards guests looking for an authentic, self-catering, rustic bushveld experience.

Activities & Facilities

All activities from Mopani Rest Camp. Guests are picked up from Tsendze main gate. Guided game walks or game drives can be pre-arranged with Mopani camp, subject to availability.

Facilities at the camp include two communal kitchens, two ablution blocks (wheelchair friendly and with an option for open air showers), gas geysers for warm water and a solar battery system which powers the lighting. There are no electricity points at any of the sites, and portable power generators are not permitted. Two communal refrigeration facilities are available, and the nearest shop, restaurant and filling facilities are all available at Mopani, seven kilometers away. The Mooiplaas area around Tsendze is known for its buffalo herds and numerous elephant bulls.

Travel routes and times from central Gauteng are listed below. Travel by road requires entry through one of Kruger National Park's gates.

By Road - Phalaborwa Gate:

• Take the N1 toll-road to Polokwane (Pietersburg).
• 40 km before Polokwane turn right onto the R71 and head for Tzaneen.
• After Tzaneen head towards Phalaborwa and the gate. Allow between 6 to 7 hours for the trip to the gate.
• Tsendze Rustic Campsite is approximately 70 km away from the gate. Allow about 2 ½ hours for the drive to the camp, however if you want to enjoy the game viewing possibilities give yourself more time!
Note: Check-in at Mopani at least 1 hour before gate closes.

Recommended game drives from this camp:

1. From Tsenze Rustic Campsite, Take the H1-6 north and exit on the S142, which passes the Pioneer Dam and several other waterholes. Turn right onto the S142, just after the Notomeni Pan to return to the H1-6.

2. Follow the H1-6 out of Tsenze south, past several waterholes. Turning left onto the S48, you can visit the Makhadazi picnic spot. If you take the S48 right, you travel along the riverbank back towards the H6-1 junction that will take you back to the camp, or continue straight on to the Nshawu Dam.
