The Greater Kruger is the collective name for the private reserves along the national park's unfenced western boundary: the Sabi Sand, Timbavati, Klaserie, Manyeleti, Balule and more. The fences came down decades ago, so two million hectares function as one ecosystem, with lion, leopard and elephant moving freely across the lot.

- The park is the state-run reserve: self-drive roads, rest camps, tar and gravel, no off-road driving. The Greater Kruger is the ring of private reserves sharing its unfenced western boundary, where lodges run off-road game drives, night drives and walks with strict vehicle limits at sightings. Same animals, very different experience.
- Which private reserve should I choose?
- The Sabi Sand is the pinnacle: the most reliable leopard viewing in Africa and the most celebrated lodges. The Timbavati and Klaserie offer the same open system with a wilder, quieter character and gentler rates. Manyeleti and Balule are the value routes into the identical ecosystem. Each has its own page here; your safari specialist matches reserve to brief.
- Why do rates differ so much between reserves?
- Land access, lodge density and brand. A Sabi Sand lodge pays for the tightest traversing rights and the strongest sighting record; a Klaserie or Balule camp delivers the same unfenced wildlife with simpler polish. The spread runs from around R6,000 to over R60,000 per person per night, all-inclusive.
- When is the best time to visit?
- May to September, the dry winter: thin bush, animals at water, mild days and no better game viewing anywhere. The green summer brings baby animals, birds and value rates, with afternoon storms.
- Should I fly in or drive?
- Fly to Hoedspruit, Skukuza or Kruger Mpumalanga airports, one to ninety minutes from most lodges, or drive the five to six hours from Johannesburg, often via the Panorama Route. Fly-in maximises game-drive time; the drive suits road-trippers.
- Are the animals the same as in the national park?
- Exactly the same populations, the boundary is unfenced and invisible to wildlife. What changes is your access to them: private traversing, off-road approaches and guides who can follow a leopard rather than wait for it to cross the road.

When
The Kruger National Park experiences two distinct seasons: a dry winter from May to October and a wet summer from November to April. As the area is a year-round destination, when you choose to go largely depends on the type of experience you wish to have.
We rate the dry winter season as ideal for game viewing and safari walks. During this period, the vegetation thins out significantly and animals congregate around permanent waterholes, making them easier to spot. This is also a pleasant time to visit as there are relatively few mosquitoes and little to no rain. Day-time temperatures during winter are warm but not stiflingly hot. Visitors will need warm clothing for the chilly evenings and early-morning game drives.
At the end of the winter season, from around September to October, conditions can become very hot and humid. Concentrations of animals around water sources are at their peak, resulting in exceptional game viewing.
The summer rainfall period typically begins in November and continues until about April. The park is at its most beautiful as the vegetation becomes lush and green, providing an ideal backdrop for wildlife photography. This is also the calving season, when baby animals abound, and bird watching is at its best with the arrival of summer migrants. If you’re keen on combining your Kruger safari with a classic South African beach holiday, this is the time to visit.
Travellers looking to avoid the crowds should avoid Kruger during the peak tourist seasons from July to August and during the December/January South African school holidays.

These smaller reserves offer diverse landscapes of savannah grasslands, granitic hills and riverine woodlands, often with the dramatic Drakensberg Mountains as backdrop. Most are home to the Big Five and a wide array of other big mammals.
